Formed in the mid-1980's (as Fax-Line Servicing), Uniter Group became one of the country’s biggest repairers of fax and printer equipment. I joined the business in January 1989, initially working in the accounts department and later moving to the call centre.

One of my duties involved distributing major account contract details around the business. Initially, this took the form of a paper document consisting of approximately four to five pages. Once this document reached over twenty pages, it became increasingly difficult to update and publish with new contract information. Discussing this situation with the IT Director, we formulated the idea of creating an intranet service to electronically publish this data.

We set up two servers - one running Windows Server to act as a web server, the other to host a MySQL database within a Linux environment. With those set up, I was tasked with creating an Intranet service. Initially I created the Customer Database, but over the following years, many other features were added providing tools and systems used by all parts of the business.

The majority of the Intranet was still being used right up until the closure of the business, then known as Cura Technical, in 2020.
